BACKGROUND: Duo Maxwell on the Gundam Wiki

Most of Duo's history is fairly complete on the Wiki, and includes his backstory as established in Episode Zero. There are several manga side stories that are not considered official canon, but I like to use to fill in the gap between the end of the series and Endless Waltz. Unfortunately, they all end with the same conclusion, that the Wing boys decide to destroy the Gundams by sending them into the sun, as none of the manga were developed with each other in mind, but rather to be standalone tie-ins between the series and the OVA.

In Battlefield of Pacifists, Duo and the others find information about an old abandoned OZ mobile suit factory that's floating around in space on an asteroid called Vulkanis. A group of militants attempting to claim these suits for themselves captures Quatre Winner, pilot of Gundam Sandrock, and brainwashes him into leading them to it. The group must then not only rescue their friend, but stop the militants and the special mobile suit that is guarding the hidden factory from intruders using a computerized AI.

A synopsis of Blind Target is available on the Gundam Wiki. It's fairly complete. Duo's part in the story was mostly to help Quatre appear dead after an assassination attempt fails, and then later to set up the abandoned and broken colony they were hiding on to explode. He also sets up a communications network to secretly broadcast a meeting in which they get the bad guy to reveal his motives, and then later helps to destroy a secret moonbase that was building mobile suits for another war.

In Ground Zero, Duo, along with the Trowa, pilot of Gundam Heavyarms, and Quatre, have decided that the Gundams need to be destroyed. However, after a less than pleasant discussion with Wufei, pilot of Gundam Altron, who decided to keep his, they're worried that Heero, pilot of Wing ZERO, will reject the idea. They send him a cryptic message and come up with an elaborate plan to trick him into agreeing. However, as he's going through their traps and tricks, Heero begins to figure it out, and finally confronts them. When they admit the truth, Heero agrees with them that the Gundams need to be destroyed, and gives them permission to send his into the sun with theirs.

In Preventer 5, it's been several months since the end of Endless Waltz, and the Earth Sphere is celebrating Relena's birthday, but a terrorist group takes the partygoers hostage. Duo's contacted to help, and he agrees to go in under cover to act as a decoy and cause a disturbance that will throw the terrorist group off-guard, allowing the rest of the team to rescue the hostages.

I don't use anything from Frozen Teardrop as I've not seen anything other than rough fandom translations, and Duo's current canon point is from before it takes place.

PERSONALITY: Duo lives up to his name in several ways as an exercise in duality. Often seen as the "cheerful" one, Duo wears a mask of openness. He comes across as outgoing, friendly, and even a little dim-witted. He laughs through trouble, and sometimes gives the impression that he sees everything as a game. He likes to joke a lot, give people nicknames, and he's loud and boisterous. He's also something of a flirt, and always has a snarky remark to tease people with. People tend to underestimate Duo's skill and intelligence because of this, and he likes it that way. It keeps him under the radar.

This is the side everyone sees, but his humor, when one pays attention, is often morbid and dark, giving a small glimpse into how he thinks. Duo has trouble getting close to people, and he often holds them at arm's length, never letting them see his real self. He has severe survivor's guilt over having so much loss and death around him from such a young age that he's constantly terrified that anyone he gets too close to will die and leave him behind. This is why it takes a long time for Duo to allow himself to get attached to someone. When he finally does, he goes into a mild panic when he thinks that person is going to die.

This other side of Duo is also more serious. He very clearly understands the gravity of the situations he ends up in. He's not afraid to die, but that doesn't mean he wants to. What he's more afraid of is losing those he cares about. It really isn't until he's sure the other pilots and his allies can take care of themselves and won't get themselves killed that he starts to let down his walls to them.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Duo is a pretty normal human teen when it comes to physical abilities. There is hinting in the manga versions of Gundam Wing that the five pilots might be Newtypes (psychic, evolved humans), but, if that's the case, than Duo is the weakest of the five. He's the only pilot that never masters the ZERO system. What he doesn't have in special powers, though, he makes up for in skills. Duo's a master mechanic and capable of operating any kind of machinery he gets his hands on, even at a very young age. He can fix even his own Gundam, a very complex and specialized mobile suit, himself by finishing the upgrades that were started by the engineer who gave it to him by attacking enemy suits and using the spare parts he salvages from each battle. He's also very skilled with various types of weapons such as explosives and firearms. His life as a street orphan gave him very good breaking and entering skills as well, and he's very rarely caught.
