CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Duo Maxwell
AGE: 17
CANON: Gundam Wing
NAME: Duo Maxwell
AGE: 17
CANON: Gundam Wing
CANON HISTORY: Wikia (after Endless Waltz, before Frozen Teardrop)
CANON PERSONALITY: Duo lives up to his name. He's an exercise in duality, someone who hides behind a mask of openness. He comes across as outgoing, easy to laugh, and generally just someone who likes to have fun. He's loud, boisterous, and energetic. And he easily gets on the nerves of those around him. He tends to be pretty chill, often appearing lazy or like he's slacking off, and seems to enjoy when others get annoyed at his actions. He's got a nickname for everyone. Duo's also very tactile in his interactions, patting people on the back or shoulder, leaning on them when he knows it irks them. Duo is a big troll and likes to get under people's skin.
Underneath the apparently playful, childlike attitude is someone who's suffering from combinations of PTSD, survivor's guilt, and abandonment issues. Duo lost everyone dear to him by the time he was 8 years old and spent four years living by himself on the streets of his colony. In the Endless Waltz light novel, it's revealed that Duo had been part of a street gang led by a boy named Solo. There was a plague on the colony, and Duo broke into a hospital, figured out which medicine it was that doctors were using to treat it, and stole some for the other kids. Solo still died from the illness, and Duo, who hadn't taken any of the medicine for himself, took the name Duo to represent Solo's final words, "I'll always be with you." In Episode Zero, the street gang is brought into a church where a kind priest and nun care for them and try to find them adoptive homes. Duo was the only one that didn't settle into a new home, getting sent back several times, and he ended up staying at the church for about a year. Sister Helen teaches him how to braid his hair, and the only clothes they had for him were small priest robes that they altered to a size that would almost fit him. He was often bullied and teased for being an orphan and for being smelly, even fighting back to the point of putting another child in the hospital, but Helen teaches him how to cope. When a group of rebels takes over the church, it's destroyed while Duo is attempting to steal a mobile suit for them, and he comes back to find everyone dead. He's later caught stealing again while once again living on the street and one of the jailers makes the comment, "that kid must have made a deal with the God of Death," in reference to Duo having survived the church. The nickname sticks.
Duo continues to wear the priest collar, as the shirt had been baggy to begin with, and his street life wasn't really conducive to a lot of growing. And he keeps the braid, telling himself it's more to do with keeping his hair out of the way than anything else. But Duo is sentimental. His name is proof of that, and the rest of his look carries his past with him. Street life doesn't allow for much in the way of sentimental possessions, so he found other ways to keep those he cared about with him. When he finally breaks into a Sweepers ship around 12 years old, he gets caught a few days later. The crew was surprised and annoyed that he had gotten on board and then managed to evade them for that long. When brought to the engineer that would later create Deathscythe, he introduces himself as Duo Maxwell, taking the priest's name as his own in another subtle show of sentimentality.
His attitude with Professor G, however, is distant and almost gruff. Unlike his previous relationships, Duo keeps the entire Sweepers crew at arm's length for the next three years out of fear of getting attached and losing those close to him again. He's sarcastic and sharp with them, almost bitter. He refers to himself as the God of Death, and often can be heard saying things about how his life is a fluke or just a stroke of luck. He's quoted as saying, "If anyone's gotta do the dirty work, it might as well be me." He doesn't value his life, seeing it as cheap. Either he really thinks he's the God of Death, or he just says that to cover up just how inevitable he thinks his actual death is. The latter is more likely, as he can sometimes be reckless and take crazy risks without thinking, as he feels like it won't matter as much if he's killed than if someone else is. This eventually carries over when Operation Meteor launches, and Duo leaves the colonies to head for Earth with Deathscythe. Initially thinking he was the only Gundam, he gets wind of four others, and goes to find them. During the course of the war, Duo risks everything several times, gets caught, gets beat up (several times), and still somehow makes it out alive. He wins at survival.
However, during this time, the other four Gundam pilots essentially prove to him that they're not as vulnerable as he might think they are. They, too, win at survival, and this ends up with him slowly forming bonds with them, even against his better judgement. He gradually begins to let his guard down. He's still upbeat and outgoing, the more talkative of the group, but he lets them see the darker side... his seriousness, his dedication to their mission, his ability to carry it out without hesitation. He takes the punches so they can succeed. He gets attached, even if he had been wary, and it distresses him greatly when things get bad. When Heero self-destructs Wing, Duo and Quatre go into hiding together, and Quatre easily points out that Duo is clearly worried. For once, he doesn't deny it. When Quatre goes to do the same to help Duo and Wufei get into outerspace, Duo almost doesn't leave, afraid of losing Quatre, but Wufei manages to convince him that it's better for him to go. When Hilde makes a run from Libra after stealing the plans, Duo meets her to defend her against the attacking suits, and yells at her for taking unnecessary risks (hi, Pot, meet Kettle), but he's only angry because he was scared she'd get killed. In Blind Target, Quatre's office is bombed and Duo is devastated until he finds out that Quatre had been running late to the meeting and missed it by moments. People are still important to him, and he fears losing them... a lot.
At the end of Endless Waltz, he's with Quatre and Trowa, wondering just what's in store for them in the future. Can they really live without the fighting and constant drive just to survive? He manages to find a way, and ends up often helping out with the Preventers just to keep himself grounded. He acts like he's doing them a favor, but really, it's more likely to keep in touch with his compatriots and a good excuse to see them without looking like a needy friend. Duo needs his friends, but he's loathe to admit it, most of all to himself.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Duo has no specific special abilities that could be considered supernatural. No special powers. No spellcasting abilities. He's just a regular Joe with a really mixed set of luck. He's incredibly lucky to survive, but horribly lucky that others die... or that he gets beat up... or that his often gets stranded, shot down, left behind, or injured. What he is good at is survival. He's a true urban survivalist, with skills in breaking and entering, thievery, and disappearing in a crowd. He can lose a tail in moments, as he does in Blind Target when looking for Trowa, and then even ambush said tail to get them to actually stop following him completely. He's skilled in various firearms and explosives from almost three years of being a guerrilla resistance fighter. And he's got an uncanny knack for being able to pilot, drive, operate, and repair just about anything mechanical that's put in front of him. He's not much of a distance runner, but he's an excellent sprinter and can dodge through crowds with surprising ease. He also plays a mean game of basketball.

AU NAME: Donald Maxwell
AU AGE: 17, going on 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None
AU NAME: Donald Maxwell
AU AGE: 17, going on 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None
AU HISTORY: Donald is a ward of the city. He was abandoned at the hospital as an infant and has been living in foster care ever since. He was unruly as a child, often running away from foster homes up until he was 12. As a high school senior, he is barely passing in school, and in danger of being held back from moving on to the university if he doesn't straighten up and start actually applying himself in class. Donald is not dumb, just lazy, and more interested in working on a project car he bought off a junkyard buddy. He keeps the car at the yard and works on it in his spare time. This past year, he got it up and running, registered it, and uses it for his pizza delivery job.
His interest in mechanics and engineering doesn't stop there. He has a knack for making things work, having always been a bit of a tinkerer. The foster home he's currently at is home to an engineer who discovered and managed to foster Donald's interest in robots and mechanical workings. It was the main reason he stayed. His other love and dream in life is to fly... airplanes, space shuttles, you name it. He's fascinated by the stars and the Moon and can be often be found trying to find a dark enough place to really be able to do some sky watching at night.
He likes to play basketball at the public court near where he's currently living, but never tried out for the school team because, "organized school sports are dumb." While not jock-level athletic, Donald is physically fit, and enjoys a good game of 'sportsball' with friends, whatever that sport might be.
He has a few teachers in the school that have sort of taken him under their wings, so to speak, in an attempt for him to realize his potential. In those situations, he has managed to get slightly above average grades when he's usually a below average student, showing that he can learn when he applies himself, he just doesn't. He has a record of fights in the school, as he often puts himself between a bully and their victim after being picked on about being a foster kid a few times, and has been in more than a few violent scuffles, some of them ending with the other kid in the hospital. This has given him a reputation in the school among the other kids, and he uses it to his advantage when sticking up for the "little guy".
AU PERSONALITY: In comparison to his canon personality, Donald still maintains his outgoing and brash attitude, sarcasm, and sharp wit. He still has a slight abandonment complex, but he's no where near as avoidant of his issues thanks to them not being centered around death, sickness, and war. He warms up to people faster, especially if they show they're not going to ditch him at first chance, and leave him behind. The idea that he was abandoned as an infant kind of hovers in the back of his mind, however, and this does color how he feels about other people's attentions towards him.
He's intolerant of bullies, and has put a few kids in the hospital when both sticking up for himself and for others. For the most part, though, he's still fairly laid back and easygoing, but with less survivor's guilt. His chill outer personality tends to leave him introducing himself as "Don", and he gives everyone else nicknames, and tends to be the comic relief.
He falls asleep in class a lot, which garners snickers and jokes from the other kids, and is easily distracted and bored. He is more interested in drawing robots and cars in his notebooks than actually taking notes. He doesn't cut class, but he's not exactly there, either. He can be something of a daydreamer, and can often be found hiding on the roof of either the school or where he's living, looking up at the sky, especially on nights with a full moon. He hates when people tease him and call him "Donny", and he really hates it when teachers and guardians call him "Donald". It's been the source of some disciplinary action in school, as he'll often ignore teachers who use his full name.
