Character Background

• History: Gundam Wiki
• Core Relationships:
  • Solo - the original leader of Duo's street gang when he was young. Solo essentially saved Duo's life. It's implied that Duo's been on the street as a war orphan from very early in his childhood. It's very likely he doesn't remember his parents except for some extremely fleeting memories, and he might not even know his own real name. Solo was the first person he had who he can completely remember being like family for him. The other orphan became a big brother figure for Duo, and helped him survive on his own among the other street kids. When a plague took out a good portion of the colony he was on, Duo was able to sneak into a hospital and steal medicine, but he couldn't save all the kids in the gang. He ended up not taking any of the medicine for himself, and yet survived, but Solo died from the illness. Duo took his name from Solo, who told him as he was dying, "I'll always look out for you." Duo then decided, "If you were Solo, then we'll be Duo." And he called himself Duo from then on.
  • Father Maxwell, Sister Helen - a priest and nun who took in Duo's group of orphans to try helping them. Duo met Father Maxwell when he quite literally ran into him during a heist. He and the other orphans were fleeing the scene after stealing food from a local grocer. Duo had turned for a split second to look back and taunt the shopkeeper, only to run into the priest, knocking them both to the ground. After a short exchange, Duo wasn't about to let himself be caught, so he ran. Later, a group of law enforcement came to the abandoned building the kids were living in and cleared them out after condemning it, sending them all to live at the church. Maxwell and Helen were able to get homes for most of the kids, but Duo was difficult and kept getting sent back as a troublemaker. Maxwell felt he saw a bit of himself in Duo, and decided that maybe having Duo stay at the church wouldn't be a bad idea, deciding to raise him to be a priest. The two adults began to bond with the boy, Helen teaching him to braid his hair because he refused to let her cut it, Maxwell teaching him about God and his faith, both teaching Duo that it was possible to love and be loved, that he didn't have to be alone. However, during a rebellion on the colony, a group of fighters took refuge in the church and forced Maxwell and Helen to be their hostages and caretakers for their wounded. Duo overheard the group talking about needing a mobile suit, so he ran off to steal one in an effort to protect the only two people he had left in his world. But, when he had returned, the Earth Sphere military had razed the church to the ground, deciding to take out the entire rebel group even if it meant sacrificing the civilians inside. It was after this when Duo started using Maxwell as his last name.
  • Professor G - the mysterious and secretive engineer behind the development of several large mobile suits, the ZERO system, and Duo's two Gundams, Deathscythe and Deathscythe Hell. Despite an extremely sophisticated and strong security system, Duo had managed to stowaway on the ship of a group of salvage workers called The Sweepers. Impressed by his skill in staying unnoticed on their ship for weeks, even months, Professor G decided to let Duo stay, and trained him to pilot the Gundam he was building for Operation Meteor. They have a love/hate relationship, understanding that the only reason they're together is to essentially eliminate the Order of the Zodiac (aka: OZ, a secret military society slowly attempting to take over the entire Earth Sphere). Duo respects G to a certain extent, but there's no real love lost between them. And they both are willing to do what needs to be done to keep certain secrets, even if it means Duo allows himself to be beat up by G's associates to prevent G from being seen as helping the boy. The only thing Duo feels came from this relationship is that G gave him the means to act on his feelings about OZ and what they'd done in the past, as many of the bad things on his colony came from their presence.
  • Howard - another member of The Sweepers, stationed on Earth for ocean salvage operations, secretly helping Duo operate Deathscythe under cover. War is a dangerous business. Equipment takes damage. So, when Duo gets to Earth, Professor G puts him in touch with his associate Howard to help with repairs if Deathscythe was ever to get damaged in battle. Howard is much more laid back, and gets along with Duo on a more comfortable level than G. Howard sort of fills in the weird uncle role for Duo, looking out for him and helping him when he needs it, but not really being a parental figure. Duo uses Howard's massive ocean carrier as transport for Deathscythe between missions, and works with the Sweepers crew on board to gather parts and perform repairs when needed. Duo later finds out that Howard was also another former engineer like G who had worked on mobile suit development, and had been part of the team that developed the Tallgeese, one of the first humanoid mobile suits ever created. If it'd not been for Howard's help early on, Duo would have been much worse off, and Duo acknowledges that. He's grateful to the old man for his support, and he almost admits it to him later when Howard makes his way to outerspace to help the pilots in the final battle and join them with the massive space carrier, Peacemillion.
  • The other Gundam pilots - Heero Yuy, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, Chang Wufei - enemies at first as they each thought they were acting independently and saw each other as threats to their individual missions, but later a team when they come together on realizing they have a common mission. The other four pilots were people Duo wasn't sure about at first. It took several meetings and coop missions for him to realize that they were mostly just like him, there to stop OZ, start a rebellion, and prevent a space colony from the L5 cluster from being dropped on Earth to create a nuclear winter. While each one was fairly formidable on their own, as a team, they became stronger. A few upgrades for them to have new Gundams later on, and they fought with a total of seven mobile suits and one massive space carrier against an entire army. These four other teens became the closest people to Duo that he'd known in a long time. They became his brothers in arms. Shared trauma at 15 years old can do that to a person...
  • Hilde Schbeiker - a young OZ officer who tried to recruit Duo until she realized who he was. At first, she was angry that he'd fooled her and taken advantage of her to get to the Lunar Base. She tried to take him prisoner for OZ, but Duo could be hard to keep down. It was Duo's conviction in what he was doing that caused her to leave OZ, to realize the organization she was working for wasn't the great thing she'd been told it was. After that, she became a close companion to him, helping him hide when he was in the colonies, bringing him news and information that she would overhear through her connections she still had after leaving OZ. She was also a trained soldier and pilot, and was able to help in the final battle for quite a bit until her outmatched equipment began to fail from the damage it had taken. Duo was crushed when she was almost killed, scared he was going to lose another person in his life, but she got the help she needed in time. If anything, Hilde gets Duo to realize he's still vulnerable to making attachments, no matter how hard he tries to keep everyone at arm's length to protect himself from what he sees as their inevitable loss. She makes him realize that he has people he wants to protect again, and this encourages him to keep fighting to save the Earth Sphere.
  • Lucrezia Noin, Sally Po - fellow Preventer agents and former enemies turned allies. During the year between the end of the war started by Operation Meteor and the subsequent kidnapping of Foreign Minister Relena Dorlan, Noin and Sally would occasionally work with Duo and the other four Gundam pilots in various intelligence gathering and peacekeeping missions to prevent another large scale war. During this time, they developed an easy-going friendship, especially with Duo, who was one of the more outgoing of the five young teens. Duo enjoys bantering with the two women during missions, keeping things light despite how heavy their situation might actually be.
  • Relena (Peacecraft) Dorlan - a young girl thrust into the world political stage at a very young age. While Duo wasn't sure what to think of her at first, he came to respect Relena as she grew and developed into a stronger person. She stuck to her convictions and beliefs, but not so much that she couldn't adapt to the changing world around her. She was forced into positions of power to be used as a puppet for others' plans, yet still managed to use her influence for good. Duo respects her ability to remain poised in moments of adversity, always impressed when she doesn't lose her cool. Relena tends to be the type of character that inspires others to fight for good or be better people, and Duo is no exception.
  • The other four Gundam engineers - Doctor J, Inspector H, Doktor S, Master O - Professor G's colleagues who worked with him to develop Wing ZERO. Duo trusts these guys even less than G, but he respects their goals and what they're trying to achieve. He finds them all creepy in their own ways, and figures that, as long as he doesn't get on their bad sides, then they can go about their separate ways once everything is over. Definitely no attachments here.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:
  • Duo is talkative and outgoing. This is, for the most part, a good thing. He makes friends with Quatre almost the instant they decide to work together. It almost gets him out of trouble with Cathy when he finds Trowa at the circus and she tries to stop Duo from bringing Trowa back to the fighting. Later in canon, it enables him to establish a good rapport with his Preventers teammates, Noin and Sally. In a way, it helps him cope with a lot of his trauma by maintaining this projection of energy. He talks his way through everything when he doesn't have to remain silent.
  • Duo is great for boosting the morale of others. He has his moments of seriousness, but, for the most part, he's one of the better ones for trying to stay positive, even when he's doing it in a dark way. He can talk about sacrificing himself in a battle like it's no big deal, smiling the whole time. Probably not a healthy thing, but it gets him through the moment.

(2+) Negative Experiences:
  • Duo prides himself on his honesty, telling people at various points that he may run and hide, but he never lies. But this in itself is something of a lie. Duo is a pro at masking. He is a traumatized teenager with a lot of death in his past, right from a very young age. So, while he keeps up this personality of energy and outgoingness, he's hiding a much more serious side to himself. Watching news reports of OZ moving in on the colonies has him sitting in a dark room, staring at the TV with a dour expression, and he comments to himself how things are turning against them. He might joke about dying when Heero comes to rescue him from an OZ prison, but, in reality, he was quite ready to hit the self-destruct button on his Gundam instead of being captured, something they'd all been trained to do.
  • Duo can be annoying. This loud and energetic personality, while great with some people, really grates on the nerves of people who tend to be more serious. It's a constant point of friction between Duo and Wufei, to the point where it takes a long time for Wufei to start to respect Duo as a fellow pilot. It's not until after the two escape the Lunar Base prison with their rebuilt and upgraded Gundams that Wufei starts to consider Duo as a teammate.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Nothing explicit. It's postulated that the five pilots are all Gundam Wing's version of Newtypes, a type of evolved/advanced human in the Gundam-multi-verse. However, only a few characters show any characteristics of being strong Newtypes capable of making any use of their abilities. If Duo is in any way a potential Newtype, he's not explicitly shown being capable of using Newtype powers. It could just be that he's very skilled at what he does.
• Blood Type: Darkblood
• Omen: Giant Fruit Bat (Indian Flying Fox)
• Blessed Day: May 29th
• Patron Pthumerian: Bausphomette
• Blood Power Manifestation: Duo finds the telekinesis powers the easiest to master, and the most amusing to play with. Making things float around to spook people is fun for him, and he accidentally ends up mastering this aspect of his blood powers just because he uses it so much for the amusement value. Also, not having to get up to get a snack while doing something else? Having it float to you instead? Heck yeah. Reality manipulation is the hardest and something Duo might never really get the hang of. Same with manipulating time, though he's going to figure that one out before he figures out manipulating reality for sure.
